How do you describe your company’s “style”?
At MyDeejay, we’re all about putting together creative music sets, and mixing them artistically to keep the dance floor packed. By working closely with our clients to understand their unique tastes and ideas, we’re able to really personalize the weddings we DJ, while still creating a fun, inclusive atmosphere for all the guests in attendance.
What keeps you passionate about weddings?
Our team is really motivated by the dedication our clients (and their vendor teams) put into planning one-of-a-kind celebrations. Each wedding we spin is a little different, and it means so much to us to be part of an event that means so much to the couple.
Are you seeing any trends emerging in 2013?
We’re seeing lots of eclectic music being woven into weddings today. As we always tell our clients, there is so much incredible music out there that there’s no reason to include songs you don’t personally love. A creative and experienced DJ can help a couple to identify songs that reflect their tastes while still being enjoyable to a diverse crowd of guests.
What is one question every couple should ask a DJ before hiring them?
Assuming all the other indicators of professionalism (an established business, liability insurance, emergency backup plan, etc.) have been covered, I think the most important question to ask is “How can I be sure you will be my DJ?” It’s so important to develop a strong rapport with the person who will be providing the music and announcements for your wedding. You want to be certain that he or she understands your tastes, has great judgment, and is going to work well with your other vendors throughout your wedding day. And when you find that perfect DJ, you want to have assurance that he or she is going to be there for you. Will it be guaranteed on your contract? Do you know what will happen if that person gets sick or has another emergency? This is essential information when it comes to choosing the DJ for your wedding.
What is one piece of advice that you like to give couples?
Don’t get overwhelmed by the “have-to’s” when it comes to the wedding. Consider what’s truly important to you as a couple, and focus on incorporating your personal tastes and priorities into your wedding day while leaving the rest behind.
Outside of weddings, what brings you joy?
Every parent says this, but my kids bring a tremendous amount of joy to my life. They’re awesome and never fail to crack me up on a daily basis. I also love working with other kids – I’m a volunteer advocate for children in foster care, and really enjoy mentoring and supporting kids who need more guidance and friendship.
